Environmental science

Last Updated: 10:37 GMT 27/04/2007

Environmental science research has led to a deeper understanding of the greenhouse gas phenomena, climate change, and air pollution in the 21st century. Join the growing public awareness of a need for action in addressing environmental problems.

Warming of tropical oceans increase hurricanes

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) expect a large increase in cyclones due to the warming of tropical oceans.

Complete tropical hurricanes story.

Carbon dioxide sinks

As the prominence of global warming increases, there is growing interest in methods of reduce carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Forests, Oceans, and soil can all absorb carbon dioxide from our atmosphere and are called carbon dioxide sinks.

Complete carbon dioxide sinks story.

Weather change is climate change

Its not just warmer weather expected with global warming. The Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns extreme and frequent conditions are on there way.

Complete weather change story.

How realistic is carbon capture?

We take fossil fuels from the depths of the earth; can we put the polluting carbon emissions back in ground? Is burying fossil fuel emissions the answer to global warming?

Complete carbon capture story.

Thawing tundra emits dangerous methane gas

Rising atmospheric temperatures are causing millions of square meters of northern tundra to melt from permafrost into marshland at an unprecedented rate. Scientists are finding that these new wetlands emit a high level of methane gas which is a strong green house gas and causes the acceleration of global warming.

Complete thawing tundra story.

Wind turbines endure -60°C at Belgian lab in in Antarctica

The International Polar Foundation is a Belgian research project building a sustainable facility in Antarctica. They are using wind mills from 'Proven Energy' a British company supplying eight of its 6kW turbines for the research station.

Complete wind turbines story.

Coral reefs and salmon stocks are effected by rising ocean acidity

Oceans are becoming more acidic due to the raising levels of CO2 in our atmosphere and effecting sensitive sea-life such as coral and salmon stocks. Scientist estimate oceans have absorbed about 118 million tons of CO2, or maybe a third of the fossil fuel emissions.

Complete ocean acidity story.

Zero carbon breakthrough on display

The Irish firm Steorn has allegedly developed an energy source that produces clean constant energy using magnetic fields and clear plastic. If the technology works, it will revolutionize energy use in the face of the global fuel crisis. A demonstration is being held at Kinetica Museum, Spitalfields London, tonight and streamlined on the Internet.

Complete zero carbon energy story.

Sir John Houghton interview

Sir John Houghton CBE FRS was co-chairman of the Scientific Assessment for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1988-2002. He was previously chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (’92-’98), chief executive of the Met Office (’83-’91) and Professor of Atmospheric Physics, Oxford (’76-83).

Still very much involved in helping world governments and organisations tackle climate change, Sir John agreed to meet GoCarbonFree at his home on the fringes of the Snowdonia National Park, Wales.

Complete Sir John Houghton story.
