Sir John Houghton Interview

Sir John Houghton CBE FRS was co-chairman of the Scientific Assessment for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1988-2002. He was previously chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (’92-’98), chief executive of the Met Office (’83-’91) and Professor of Atmospheric Physics, Oxford (’76-83).

Still very much involved in helping world governments and organisations tackle climate change, Sir John agreed to meet GoCarbonFree at his home on the fringes of the Snowdonia National Park, Wales.

Carbon trading

Carbon credits are a new currency that allow companies and individuals to compensate for their carbon emissions by either reducing carbon dioxide output directly or offsetting their own output. Carbon Credits originate from The United Nation’s Clean Development Mechanism (under the Kyoto Protocol) that allows a finite number of carbon credits to be bought and sold. It is vitally important for people to limit their personal impact on the environment and buy carbon credits to offset what they can't reduce.

Environmental science

One key objective of environmental science is to make predictions of atmospheric and climate changes in the 21st century. By understanding the greenhouse gas phenomena, climate change and air pollution, scientists are gaining insight as to how climate change is affecting our world.

Green business

The advertising, media and marketing industries are turning the green movement into a mass-market phenomenon. Companies of all sizes have a major role to play in the fight against climate change. Brand reputations will increasingly be governed by a company’s environmental stance and attitude towards corporate social responsibility.

Fortunately, many of the alternatives you can choose will actually make your life healthier and happier. Reducing your carbon emissions is the key step in stopping climate change.

Cultural 'climate change'

Changes in weather patterns are impacting cultural behaviour around the world. Droughts, floods, diminishing food supplies, fuel shortages and leisure impacts such as delayed ski seasons are forcing people to become more environmentally conscious. The political, ethical, and socio-cultural aspects of climate change are now being noticed on a global scale and creating an eco-centric philosophy within many societies world-wide.

Environmental politics

For the first time in British history the environmental agenda is set to become the political battleground in winning votes. Legislation concerning climate change is being passed in industrialized countries around the world, and indicates a revolution in both environmental politics and politics at large.
