Black Google Saves Energy

Last Updated: 10:50 GMT 24/09/2007

Blackle

If green is the new black, and black is the new Google, then Blackle has the traction to become THE fashionable search engine alternative.

An Australian web company has launched a search engine that is the same as Google, but better for the environment. Its names is Blackle (www.blackle.com) and has the exact same functions as the white version, but on lower energy consuming BLACK background.

Computer monitors have a lower energy consumption when displaying a black screen versus white. An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts. Taking in account the huge number of page views that Google gets, an estimated 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved. That is equal to 1,425,500 tons of carbon dioxide.

In January 2007 a blog post titled 'Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year'proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. The blog said: "Take at look at Google, who gets about 200 million queries a day. Let's assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the monitors in the world are CRTs, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's $75,000, a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few color codes."

Blackle has created a friendly-er Google search engine that gives you a chance to reduce your carbon emissions. Every little bit helps, so its worth switching your homepage to www.blackle.com and do your bit in reducing climate change.

So what Blackle actually has is a Google search box on a black background, and if using the black Google can also give u a chance to reduce global warming...take a small step and switch to Blackle. You will also be able to see how much energy Blackle users have helped to save.
