Reduce Waste and Recycle

Everyone knows that it takes more energy to manufacture goods from new rather than from recycled materials. But did you know that the UK has one of the worst recycling records in Europe?

It’s so easy to avoid waste and to recycle materials. In fact, two thirds of all household rubbish can be recycled! Here’s our quick guide:

1. Many councils now collect paper, glass and plastics and some also collect metal and organic waste. Click here to find out about your local council’s recycling services.

2. Avoid buying over-packaged goods, don’t use supermarket plastic bags and try to re-use where possible e.g. milk bottles.

3. Use re-chargeable batteries! If you do use standard batteries, click here to find out whether your local council offers a battery recycling service.

4. Own a mobile phone? Well, try to keep yours longer by avoiding unnecessary upgrades! If you do need to get rid of your mobile phone, many phone shops will now take back old handsets for recycling. It’s that simple.

5. A wide range of other things can be recycled – wood, engine oil, fluorescent light tubes, textiles, TVs etc - you can find out more from the RecycleNow campaign.
