Biomass

Ugar Sugars

Biomass Biomass uses the stored energy in organic farming waste to create electricity. Many rural communities are switching from burning fossil fuels such as coal, to using their abundant agricultural waste to create energy. These communities receive funding to build the biomass plants and earn additional income from carbon credit programmes.

GoCarbonFree buys carbon credits from the Ugar Sugars project that a uses combined heat and power plant based on combustion of bagasse, a by-product of the sugarcane refining process.

The project also includes pre-processing of the bagasse to increase combustion efficiency, as well as an upgrade of the connection to the local electricity grid. By extracting more value from the sugar cane raw material, this project is expected to contribute to an increase in sugar cane prices which benefits local farmers. The reduction in carbon emissions attributable to the project are ca 64 000 tons per year



Wind

Kangping Wind

BiomassWind farms use clusters of windmills to collect the wind's kinetic energy and produce electricity. Wind is a clean fuel that produces no air or water pollution because no fuel is burned. Wind energy offers a viable, economical alternative to conventional power plants in many areas.

We buy carbon credits from a wind power park outside Shenyang City in the Liaoning region of Northeast China.

China's existing power production is almost exclusively fossil-based, and by increasing the proportion of renewable energy in the grid, this project contributes to carbon emissions reductions of ca 42 000 tons annually.

The wind-power plants are manufactured in Spain and Denmark and are more advanced (more effective) than domestic Chinese models, and therefore constitute technology transfer to China, in Keeping with the spirit of the Kyoto Protocol.



Methane Capture

Her Fried

Methane capture and power generation from coal mines use the noxious greenhouse gas methane to create electricity. The gas seeps out of the ground, and if it where not captured and made into energy, it would be released into the atmosphere and contribute to climate change.

At the Her Fried coal mine in the Ruhr Valley, Rhine Westphalia, Germany, methane that previously escaped to the atmosphere is now captured and used to fire a grid-connected electricity generation plant.

Given that methane is 21 times as potent a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide, this project achieves significant greenhouse gas reductions, ca 57 000 tons annually.

The power produced from the methane is fed into the German grid, displacing electricity which has a high carbon intensity. However, carbon reduction units from the plant derive only from the methane capture, and do not take into account the displacement of electricity from the grid.
